PENTRAN Software

PENTRAN is a Parallel 3-D hybrid Sn (Discrete Ordinates) – CRT (Characteristic Ray Trace) deterministic radiation transport code, with tools for CADIS adjoint support for Monte Carlo variance reduction (including MCNP®) with a tutorial demonstration, presented and hosted by Engineering and Software System Solutions, Inc. (ES3), supported by G E SJODEN LLC and MW Nuclear LLC.  ES3 is an authorized re-seller of PENTRAN, supporting tools, cross section generation, and consulting for nuclear applications.

PENTRAN provides users with a 3-D mesh generation capability to build 3-D Sn geometries to set up, run, and visualize PENTRAN 3-D Cartesian block adaptive mesh solutions with material mass/volume balance capabilities with any standard multigroup cross sections. Parallelization can be decomposed on angular, energy, and/or spatial domains.

PENTRAN users can set up, run, and visualize shielding (forward and adjoint) and criticality models starting from a given problem geometry, as well as generate a WWINP file to accelerate an MCNP® thick shielding problem.  PENTRAN runs best on a Windows 10 or 11 laptop running WSL/Ubuntu Linux, or an Ubuntu or Mint/Mate Linux laptop, with at least 12 Gb of RAM and 4 virtual CPUs (use “lscpu” command in Linux to determine system capabilities).

PENTRAN access falls under ECCN 0D999(b) (US Dept of Commerce, 21 Mar 2011), and is generally accessible for US persons and people from most countries (excluded: Cuba; Iraq; Iran; North Korea; Sudan; Syria).  Attendees wishing to also run MCNP® and accelerate it using a PENTRAN generated adjoint solution processed in a WWINP file (read by MCNP®) must have MCNP®6.2.0 or 6.3.0 installed (MCNP® is a Trade Mark of Triad National Security, LLC).
